Remembering South Asian WWI & WWII Service

View all news

As we mark the 81st anniversary of VJ Day, we honour all those who served and sacrificed during the Second World War. We must also remember the courageous men and women from countries across the world who gave their lives in the hope of building a better future.

As part of the Royal British Legion and British Future’s My Family Legacy campaign, South Asian families are being encouraged to explore their own family histories and share stories of service, courage and sacrifice.

Since September 2025, British Future, alongside the Royal British Legion, has been touring communities across the UK, creating spaces where South Asian families can delve into their own histories and share stories of bravery, loss and service from ancestors who fought for Britain during the World Wars.

The campaign provides an opportunity for families to honour their loved ones, whatever role they played, and ensure their contributions are recognised and remembered. Remembrance should always be inclusive, reflecting the diverse communities and cultures that have contributed to Britain’s history. Nima Suchak is one of many descendants sharing her family story as her Grandfather Vallabhdas served in the Second World War in Burma and North Africa. He never spoke about his service to his family. Nima found a box of his medals which led to her uncovering his history of service and sacrifice.

Anthony Metcalfe, Head of Community Engagement at the Royal British Legion, said: “Victory in the Second World War would not be possible without the courage and sacrifice of Allied forces from across the Commonwealth and beyond, whose service helped shape modern Britain.”

Descendants involved in the My Family Legacy campaign recently came together for a special photoshoot, sharing their family stories and reflecting on the importance of preserving this shared history. They also discussed why The Forgotten Army exhibition, a collaboration between Mahtab Hussain and the Royal British Legion, is so important in raising awareness of the often-overlooked contribution of South Asian servicemen and women.

Their stories are a powerful reminder that remembrance is not simply about looking back, but it is about recognising the people and communities whose courage and sacrifice helped shape the world we live in today.

The Forgotten Army exhibition will tour Scotland from September 2026, offering further opportunities to discover and share these important stories of service and sacrifice.
