Social media platform X is still failing to protect users from hatred and regulator Ofcom risks being ‘played’ by X, British Future said today in response to Ofcom’s latest update on X.
Avaes Mohammad, South Asian Bridgers Project Manager at British Future, said:
“Ofcom risks being played by X. The platform set its own voluntary rules to abide by, which fail to match its legal requirements to protect users from hate.
“Ofcom should be demanding that X actively finds illegal content on its site and takes it down – not relying on a hard-to-use new reporting procedure that hardly anyone knows about.
“Racists are still able to spew hatred and send N-word and P-word abuse to public figures and others. Persistent offenders are not kicked off the platform, they just have the occasional tweet deleted and then carry on targeting people.
“X is still protecting abusers rather than victims of hatred on its platform.
“The Secretary of State and Prime Minister must make sure that Ofcom is keeping X within the law.”
