Just one week ahead of the UK General Election, BBC journalist Anita Anand will give a talk on Sophia Duleep Singh, the dispossessed Indian Princess and darling of the society pages turned suffragette, who is the subject of her recent book. As we witness the current debates surrounding election procedures and the role women could play in shifting the political outcome, revisiting the issue of women’s historical involvement in suffrage movements will illuminate aspects of 2015’s General Election. Arifa Akbar, literary editor of the Independent and i newspapers, will chair.
