The Future of ‘Us’: Majority and minority relationships in a changing Britain
Event type: ConferenceDate: 21/11/2023
Location: Central London - please RSVP for details
A half day-event bringing interested stakeholders together to discuss opportunities to bridge gaps within British society.
Debates about immigration, Brexit, and British ‘culture wars’ suggest that, like other European and North American countries, some in Britain feel threatened by diversity, shifting societal norms and cultural changes brought about by an increasingly multi-racial Britain.
This event looks to discuss majority-minority relations in Britain through the following two panels:
-
Inclusive identities in modern, multi-ethnic Britain
-
Defusing the ‘history war’: Narrating the origins of diverse Britain
Panellists will discuss a range of topics, including:
-
What lessons can be learned from the community cohesion era for fostering better relations between a white majority and minority groups and what can the future look like for policies around community cohesion?
-
What sort of inclusive national identity can foster unity among the English cultural majority and cultural minorities and what, if anything, can the state do to encourage such an identity?
-
Statues of slave traders and colonial figures generate debates about whether such figures still deserve statues, whether public space should only reflect a white majority and how inclusive it should be. How should such debates be settled?
