(Labour Party Conference) Welcoming Hong Kongers – a recipe for a successful ‘Welcoming Scheme’?
Event type: Party conference fringeDate: 08/10/2023
Location: ACC Meeting Room 18 (Main conference space), Liverpool
More than 140,000 Hong Kongers have moved to the UK in the first two years of the BN(O) visa scheme, making this one of the largest single groups to move to the UK for settlement in recent decades. A proactive approach has been taken to support their integration, with organisations around the country to help Hong Kongers to settle in local communities. Other schemes, for Ukrainians and Afghans have run alongside the Hong Kong scheme, with different levels of funding and support. This fringe event examines the lessons that the UK and Labour can learn from these current schemes, to help the settlement of migrants coming to the UK via political and humanitarian routes, and consider the contribution resettled communities can and do make to Britain, socioeconomically.
