Fairness of Opportunity

Event type:
Date:
Location: Glyndebourne 1, Holiday Inn, Brighton

Low-income families are feeling the worst of the effects of the economic downturn and fiscal consolidation. Research by the SMF has shown the importance of financial and practical help given by older parents in helping families in poverty. For those in receipt of this support, it opens up opportunities in the labour market and provides a buffer in times of financial hardship.

How far should we be worried about those who do not receive any intergenerational support?  Since children from wealthy families are far more likely to receive help from their parents than their less wealthy peers, this also raises major questions about social mobility and fairness.
