England United toolkit launch

Nearly 100 people joined British Future’s webinar on Tuesday 24th March 2026 for the launch of our new England United: Pride Not Prejudice toolkit, a practical resource designed to help organisations, local leaders and campaigners talk about English identity in ways that bring people together rather than divide.

Chaired by Sunder Katwala, the webinar featured Steve Ballinger presenting the toolkit and setting out its core argument: that there is both public space and public appetite for a more open, welcoming and inclusive expression of Englishness, and that this case can be made more clearly and confidently in public life.

The conversation was enriched by two thoughtful guest contributions which helped bring the toolkit’s themes to life in practice. Andy Green of Grow Social Capital CIC shared insights from A Very English Chat, his creative project encouraging people to reflect on Englishness through conversation, storytelling and personal objects. The Rt Revd Martyn Snow, Bishop of Leicester, offered reflections on leadership, belonging and the importance of shaping a national story in which people from all backgrounds can see themselves.

Together, the discussion showed that this is not simply a question of language or messaging but about practice: how inclusive English identity can be expressed through local leadership, community engagement, communications strategies and public moments that create a sense of shared belonging while clearly rejecting prejudice.

The toolkit is intended as a practical guide for those looking to take this work forward in their own settings, whether through campaigns, local events, school activity, community conversations or wider public engagement. It also points to the opportunities presented by major national moments, including the 2026 Men’s World Cup, to make inclusive expressions of English pride more visible and more widely shared.

We would be very pleased to hear any feedback or reflections, and we hope the toolkit helps to inspire further conversations, campaigns and local activity in the months ahead.
