British Future panel at Liberal Democrat Conference 2026
Event type: Liberal Democrat Party ConferenceDate: 21/09/2026
Location: Brighton
British Future was delighted to welcome more than 80 people to our Liberal Democrat Conference fringe event, “A Decade After the Brexit Vote: How Close Should the UK Get to Europe Now?”, in Brighton.
The event brought together Manuela Perteghella MP, Max Wilkinson MP and British Future Director Sunder Katwala, chaired by Heather Rolfe, for a lively discussion on the future of the UK-EU relationship and the findings of British Future’s new report, Britain and Europe: How close should we get?
Both Manuela and Max spoke positively about the report and its findings, with a thoughtful discussion on how politicians can engage with changing public attitudes towards Europe. The conversation continued with a passionate and engaged audience discussion, reflecting the range of views and questions that remain around Britain’s future relationship with the EU.
We are very grateful to Manuela, Max and everyone who joined us. It was also a valuable opportunity to meet delegates and others from across the Liberal Democrat community, and we look forward to continuing to work with parliamentarians and the wider party on areas of common ground around UK-EU relations.

Ahead of autumn's UK-EU summit, new @BritishFuture research finds that people see Brexit as a failure and want closer EU ties. But voters are undecided about what comes next, with uncertainty about the idea of another referendum, or a return to free movement [1/3]
