Beyond Ukraine and Hong Kong: Lessons for a welcoming Britain
Event type: Fringe EventDate: 04/10/2022
Location: Hall 3, Churchill Theatre, ICC, Birmingham
Time & Date: Tuesday 4 October 12:45pm-2.15pm
Location: Hall 3, Churchill Theatre, ICC, Birmingham
The UK government is now engaged in three major welcoming programmes simultaneously: the Ukraine humanitarian routes; the welcoming programmes for Hong Kongers with BN(O) visas; and the recently established Afghan Warm Welcome scheme.
This fringe event, with British Future and the Welcoming Committee for Hong Kongers, will reflect on the importance of public welcoming towards newcomers to the UK, and how welcoming policy can be co-ordinated to strengthen societal cohesion to the benefit of all. This panel will discuss:
- What policy lessons can be learned from the government’s Homes for Ukraine and
the Hong Kong BN(O) Welcome schemes? - Can this welcoming approach be expanded to other new arrivals such as Afghan
refugees, and others seeking protection here in Britain? How might it need to adapt? - Could the successes of these welcoming schemes inform a more proactive
integration and immigration strategy for the UK? - How can Britain’s approach to welcoming, settlement and integration respond to
future humanitarian and economic challenges?
- Daniel Korski – Chair of the Welcoming Committee for Hong Kongers and CEO of PUBLIC (Chair)
- Tom Tugendhat MP – Minister of State for Security of the United Kingdom
- Nathan Law – Former Legislative Councillor of Hong Kong, Writer and Acitivist
- Katherine Mulhern – Co-founder, Action for Afghanistan
