The Shakespeare Hut

The Shakespeare Hut is a long forgotten gem in the history of performance in London.
Built in 1916 to commemorate Shakespeare’s Tercentenary, this huge, mock Tudor bungalow provided shelter and entertainment for tens of thousands of Anzac soldiers on leave from the Front. This talk, by Ailsa Grant Ferguson, will examine the importance of the Hut, which saw performances from all the biggest stars of the Edwardian stage, including Ellen Terry, Johnston Forbes-Robertson and Ben Greet. Its very special place in this history of women’s performance and the Suffrage movement will also be revealed.
