Richard III should be buried in the north

Although she was born in Singapore and spent her childhood in convents around Malaysia, she feels Scottish most of all. ”When I became nearly nine it was time to come home to boarding school. Because my parents originated from Aberdeenshire, and my grandmother still lived there, they decided to send me to a school in Aberdeen.”

Bernadette sees herself as from York first and foremost, following generations of Yorkshire family before her. “I see myself as York, Yorkshire, English, British, and I feel incredibly secure in that small onion. I feel routed and very happy…and I don’t think everybody feels that way.”

In Bed with British Future

British Future went to York this week to to join the cast of the play Bed in a passionate debate about British identity. The debate, held on the set of Bed in the York Theatre Royal, saw York University lecturer Mike Savage, Charles Hutchinson of the York Press and the director of Bed Cecily Boys discuss Scotland, the British Empire and Yorkshire pride.
