British Future at the Party Conferences 2013

British Future took part in events at all three main party conferences. The Labour and Lib Dem events focused on the rising issue of populism, and the Conservative event examined the impact of Britain’s shifting voter demographics.

Conservatives – Manchester

‘After liberalism: How far can a liberal society go in promoting integration?’

Demos fringe event

How can integration be promoted in a liberal society? This Demos fringe will involve Lord Whitby, former leader of Birmingham City Council; David Goodhart, Director of Demos; British Future director Sunder Katwala and Jon Yates of the Challenge Network. The event will be chaired by Catrin Nye, BBC reporter.

Monday 30th September, 10am

At the Conservative conference British Future are co-hosting an event entitled ‘Future Majority: Can the Conservatives win in a changing Britain?’, with ConservativeHome. Speakers include Margot James MP, Stourbridge; Eric Ollerenshaw MP, Lancaster and Fleetwood; and Alok Sharma MP, Reading West. This event will be chaired by Ian Birrell.

Our director, Sunder Katwala, is chairing two NatCen events at both the Labour and Conservative party conferences. These events are entitled Britishness and the future of integration policy and will draw on data from Understanding Society – the world’s largest panel study as well as the British Social Attitudes survey. The debate will explore evolving attitudes to identity and Britishness and look at how attitudes are shifting and the implication of these changes for public policy.

Liberal Democrats – Glasgow

At the Liberal Democrat conference our event in conjunction with the Fabian Society and CentreForum is entitled ‘Populism: have politicians got the message?’, including Jim Murphy MP, Norman Lamb MP, Baroness Shirley Williams and director of British Future Sunder Katwala, chaired by Ian Wright (Corporate Affairs Director, Diageo).

Labour – Brighton
At the Labour conference we are taking part in an event entitled ‘What’s the answer to populism?’ with CentreForum and the Fabian Society, featuring Zoe Williams from the Guardian, Sadiq Khan MP, David Lammy MP and Evan Harris with Sunder Katwala chairing.
