As part of our British Histories series, British Future asked actor Harman Singh and parliamentary assistant Mario Creatura how they answer the question “where are you from?”
Neither Harman and Mario’s parents are from Britain and both discuss the different ways in which this has influenced their identities. Mario’s roots are firmly in Croydon and he feels very proud of being from such an eclectic town.
“The people there make it the sort of place we know and love,” he says, talking about his fondness for his hometown.
Harman, on the other hand, picks and mixes his identity, supporting England in the footie, being aligned to Britain when talking about the military and feeling Indian upon visiting his parents’ country.
Mario talks of his fond memories of being raised in Croydon by Italian parents while Harman says things that make him feel British include fish and chips, bad weather and sarcasm.
